Abuse can happen to anyone irrespective of human age, sex, race, religion, or ethnic or cultural background. Every year, many adults over the age of 60 are getting abused, neglected, or financially exploited. It is known as elder abuse. Elder abuse causes harm or distress to the older person due to inappropriate behavior or action towards them, where there is an expectation of trust, love, and care. This kind of abuse is a worldwide issue.
It includes harm by mates, who pretend to be very close to the elderly, like sons, daughters, neighbors, friend, and their partners. Since they are committed to family members, and these abuses get registered under domestic violence or family violence. It can be a consequence of intentional or unintentional negligence by the family members.
According to WHO’s evidence, It is estimated that 15.7% of people of the age group of 60 years and older are dealing with such abuse. But it is believed, that it happens with a higher rate than just 15.7% because the majority of these cases are not reported due to the lack of awareness.
It includes activities to deprive vulnerable people of their resources. Children and living relatives who have a history of substance abuse or have had other life troubles are of particular concern because children usually forget all the blessings and favors. Which they used to enjoy in their childhood given by the same elderly which they illtreat them now. The best way to prevent such abuses is to recognize the warning signs of their occurrence. Indications differ with the type of their occurrence. But it needs to be recognized as early as possible to prevent severe damage.
And through this blog, we are conveying a message for our society that, Old Age is the second birth as an infant. We have to take care of our elderly parents. And always remember their efforts.
